Today I took Jake back to the vet because his coughing hasn't stopped (see his blog). I dropped him off this morning for a day of x-rays and tests. He is in the early stages of congestive heart failure and will need to be treated with medication for the rest of his life. There is no guarantee that it will work, but we are sure hoping it does. I thought I had everything under control when I picked him up at the vet this evening, but I broke down and cried while the vet was talking to me and showing me his x-rays. He has an enlarged heart, a murmur, his lungs were filling with fluid, and he is slowly losing weight. If the meds work it's possible we could have him for a few more years, yeah!

Jake

the meds will help. they will help him be comfrotable and slow down the fluid build up.
did they talk to you about diet?
that is another important thing too. check around on that.
I am sorry for this news. it is tough .
It's sad to think about loosing our pets; they are so dear to us. They really are a big part of our lives. I hope with the meds, Jake will be around for a good long time. He looks like a sweet doggie. Give him a pat for me.
T- Yes they did discuss diet. They just said that he should be on a low salt diet. We need to buy him senior dog food and he is not to have salty people foods. We don't feed him people food anyhow, so that's not an issue.
He usually gives me an attitude when I take him to the vet, and he didn't this time. Maybe somehow he understands. ?

So sorry to hear this!! I still miss Rocket even with the other two dogs... They become such a part of our families!!
Oh poor Jakie. I'm sure the medications will help. Getting rid of some of the fluids should make a big difference for him.
